To play or not to play? This Shakespearean question is a matter of a major concern for the footballer Ched Evans, his perspective club Oldham and nearly all of Britain, hotly debating the future of the convicted athlete. Three years ago Evans was sentenced to five years in jail for rape. Shortly before the New Year, having served half of his term he was released under licence and was immediately invited by Oldham. The club’s decision caused a broad protest campaign from many of the club’s fans, most of its commercial sponsors, prominent media personalities and even MPs. What is this: a justifiable desire to stop a convicted criminal from turning into a public figure or employment ban, bordering on witch-hunt?
